The directions sought through coaching may be to get to a specific location or they may be to determine where you want to go first. One option is exploring your priorities. There are several different approaches that work well for exploring priorities and often looking at more than one approach provides clarity.
For example, listing what you want in all areas of your life creates an opportunity for reflection and internal exploration. The value added with a coach is the probing and clarifying. Plus, with a coach you do list everything — whereas individually few take the time to really define what they want in all areas.
Coming at exploring priorities from a different direction, rank the six categories in this illustration and within each category rank the three areas. Then estimate the percentage of your time each week that you are involved in each of the categories. Compare your value ranking with your actual schedule. Explore your thoughts on the differences with your coach.
Often by defining what you want many things happen naturally. Based on your awareness after exploring your priorities, and your insights as to what you will manage independently, choose your direction and choose where you want your coach to help you go next.
In the upcoming blogs explore coaching as your GPS in different areas.
